Research Engineer

Purpose of role
ATLAS ELEKTRONIK UK’s Research and Innovation Division is an agile division engaged in cutting edge research within the underwater defence domain. We work closely with our customers to create new capability which protects lives at sea. Our programmes are varied in scope and discipline, so we are considering applicants with a variety of skills.

Knowledge, skills and personal qualities required

  • Qualification (ideally HNC or HND but BTec or A level minimum) in engineering or science related subject (e.g. physics or mechanical engineering),
  • Good understanding of mechanical/electrical/electronic systems and how they integrate
  • Good practical skills in soldering, electrical and mechanical assembly, including use of hand tools and light power tools
  • Capable of selecting and then setting up measurement/instrumentation systems for assessing equipment under test with an appreciation for the accuracy, precision and limitations of the instrumentation used
  • Willingness to travel in the UK and overseas for supporting trials


  • Preferable but not essential to have experience with LabVIEW and MATLAB
  • Good imagination to convert unique ideas from senior scientists and engineers into practical applications and solutions

Key Accountabilities

  • Working collaboratively with specialists from a variety of disciplines
  • Communicating technical findings and concepts to Project / Technical management
  • Laboratory management of electric and magnetic physical scale model facilities. This will include:
  • fabrication, maintenance and operation of electric and magnetic physical scale models, galvanic / corrosion and magnetic test equipment and operation of computer control and data logging systems.
  • Maintenance and operation of hydraulic pressure system
  • Trials Support will involve writing of trials and Safety documentation, practical support in preparation and testing of equipment and systems and deployment, operation and recovery of trials equipment
  • Health and Safety duties will include:
    • Writing, updating and review of Safe Systems of Work and Work Procedures for the test facilities
    • Risk and PUWER assessments for general lab activities and for specific experimental activities
    • Undertaking 5S and EHS audits of the RAID test facilities
    • Manage use, control and disposal of COSHH items including COSHH Assessments


  • Working collaboratively with specialists from a variety of disciplines
  • Communicating technical findings and concepts to Project / Technical management

  • Ability to see things through to a successful conclusion despite difficulties

More information
The successful candidate must be able to achieve full SC (Security Clearance) and/or Developed Vetting status.
